Steve Benz, an avid collector of old postcards, realised his hobby could be turned into a business when he established S.B. Publications by publishing a long series of books illustrated by collections of rare postcards of cities, towns and villages of North West England, Wales, the Midlands and East Anglia.
The business expanded rapidly over the next five years and moved to Seaford in Sussex, the publisher's original home town, in 1992. Shortly afterwards his sister, Lindsay, joined the business and it continued to go from strength to strength.
The move south prompted a change of direction and S.B. Publications' list includes local history, travel and walking guides, quiz books and books on specific themes including the RMS Titanic, film biographies, the Piltdown Man and Crop Circles. It is now one of the major regional publishers based in Sussex and to date has produced over 300 titles, including more than fifty books about the county.
Steve has now retired due to ill health and has sold the business to Lindsay who continues to encourage local authors to publish books in the style that interests local readers as well as appealing to a wider audience.
