The Seaford Community Garden - in the Crouch

The Community Garden is open every Wednesday morning in the Crouch Gardens, just behind the Peace Garden off East Street, from 9.30 a.m. until 12.30.

It is well worth a visit to look at the displays and produce. Some crops and plants will also be available to take away with you, for a suitable donation. The Garden is now being prepared for Summer, the early Summer flowers are blooming already, the vegetable beds are being planted out and seed-trays are starting to appear in the polytunnel. There is also a selection of herbs to look at and sample.

Volunteer help from all in the community is welcomed, especially the retired, and the disadvantaged sector. Go along and help plant, pick and weed.

Veterans & Armed Forces Day Event

Opening Ceremony at 11am. The parade leaves Place Lane at 12 noon, proceeds via Broad Street and the High Street to arrive at the Martello Tower Saluting Base just before 12.30pm. A variety of stalls and the opportunity to watch displays in the arena. Veterans and cadets will be presented with a commemorative pin marking the 75th anniversary of D-Day.

Collections will be made on the day for the Royal British Legion.
High Trees Garden

High Trees Garden in Seaford will be opening its gates again this year to raise funds for Alzheimer’s Research UK. Garden owners, Susan and Tony Luckin have been opening their garden since 2013 for charitable causes. The garden raised a total of £1300 for charity in 2018, with £875 raised for Alzheimer’s Research UK.

Visitors will be able to enjoy the beautiful gardens, secret woodland and serene koi pond as well as discovering a brand new feature for 2019. “We like to add something new to the garden each year to provide interest and a new focal point to attract regular visitors, ” explained Tony. Tea and delicious homemade cakes will be baked once again by Dominic Avey, Young Mayor of Seaford, which proved a huge success in 2018. There will also be plants and homemade cards for sale and a raffle.

All proceeds from the event will go to Alzheimer’s Research UK, which powers world class studies focusing on prevention, diagnosis and treatments for dementia. There are 850, 000 people living with dementia in the UK. One in three people over 65 in the UK will die with some form of the condition.

Following on from their success in 2018, this summer sees the return of Colour Wave to the Crypt Gallery. Organised by Lynn Beck and Linda Wells, the collaboration of friends from Seaford bring an exciting exhibition of new work to this great venue.

With a diverse range of Art, Craft and Greetings Cards the participating artists are: -

Lynn Beck, whose acrylic paintings of local scenes are noted for their vibrant colours and quirky nature.
Linda Wells creates Hand Felted Textured Landscapes, using Embroidery techniques to add detail.
Lisa Taylor works with textured plaster paintings and wood.
Dawn Shelley Wells paints with a unique twist and unusual angles
Palo Almond works principally in watercolour with her abstracted paintings.
Shirley Burt creates texture and depth in woodland scenery.
Nina Gatward creates alphabet paintings depicting a child's name alongside watercolour landscapes
Sue Casebourne crafts sculpted animals from wool and paints landscapes, lino and woodcuts.
Jan Firbank likes to work with pastels and other mixed media for her portraiture and local vistas.

The Studio will display examples from each artist, whilst the Main Gallery and Undercroft will showcase their collections.

It is free to enter but be aware that on Thursday 1st August, the opening hours are 4 - 7 pm.

Eastbourne Classic Bus Running Day

This popular annual event offers the public the opportunity to ride on classic buses ranging from the 1930s to the 1980s. These free services run along routes that used to be operated by the former Eastbourne Corporation and Southdown bus companies.

Around 20 vehicles are expected to attend and provide regular trips including Open Top Services to Beachy Head, Birling Gap and East Dean, seafront rides to Princes Park and the Sovereign Centre as well as journeys through the Sussex countryside to Bexhill, Hailsham and Pevensey Bay. There is also to be a recreation of the 1970's Eastbourne 'Town Tour'.

All buses will start from the car park adjoining Eastbourne Station. The event provides a great family day out with recent years seeing over 2500 people enjoying the rides every time.

A souvenir programme will be available for £8 on the day. This helps to cover some of the cost of operating these privately-owned vehicles.

A play by Derek Webb. The Seventh Heaven Health Spa, owned by Andy Eden, welcomes five saleswomen, who have been given the weekend retreat as a reward for achieving the highest sales figures. There is one other guest, Agatha Crusty, writer of murder mysteries and an amateur detective.

The weekend takes a nasty turn when one of the guests is murdered.

Enter Detective Inspector Simon Aster. With such a detective on the case, Agatha decides to take matters into her own hands and starts investigating the murder and the others that inevitably follow.

This is a comedy and a genuine murder mystery for the audience to unravel.

Guided tours around the current excavation of this defended Romano-British riverside settlement.

The tour will also include a visit to the finds unit to see some of the many Roman period artefacts that have been discovered, including coins, pottery, rare carved timbers, dress ornaments and jewellery.

As well as seeing the excavation and finds, the procedures used and the interpreted history of the site will also be explained and set into its wider context.

Whilst there is no set fee any donation would gratefully received.
